Music and Mood

I have long believed that music can enhance any mood. When I am sad, I listen to sad music, so I can really, really enjoy my sadness. Recently, I have been very, very angry at a work situation. I have been betrayed deeply, both personally and professionally by someone I thought was a friend. It has injured my personal life, my professional life and MOST importantly, my psyche! I created a wonderful list of angry, fight themed songs.. like I will get you, look out, I am coming for you, payback is a bitch, bitch and songs that generally display raw power and anger and pay back. I felt empowered and ready to take on the one who betrayed me so deeply.

After a while, I decided that the anger wasn’t really serving me. You know they say anger doesn’t really hurt anyone but yourself and your anger is giving the power back to the person you are angry about. So, I started looking for music to make me feel better. Something inspiring to lift my mood and make me less angry…. I downloaded songs that have always made me feel better, I downloaded songs that others said made them feel better, christian rock, inspiring rap, you name it, I tried it and you know what? My mood actually started to lift…

Like I said, I have long thought music could be used as therapy. I even proposed it as a thesis project back in 1999. (I ended up dropping out of that career path and pursuing something else) but, my recent experiences just seem to prove to me more, that perhaps you can make a difference in your mood by listening to music.

I am a rocker, I listen to rock music, loud and proud! I have noticed that I can get more aggressive on the road, depending on what I am listening to, surely this can have the opposite effect too…..

SO… some researches think that ANY music can elevate your mood. I certainly believe that sad music makes you more sad, if you are already sad, but then maybe there is something cathartic about that.. Maybe sharing your sadness with the group conscience makes you feel less isolated in your sadness..

There is even research in music making you smarter, as evidenced by Mozart for your mind and other music publicity. This article confirms what I have always thought and provides access to more research that backs it all up…
